Pooh at 100: The Real Bear Behind a Famous Name
1Winnie-the-Pooh, the honey-loving bear known to children around the world, turned 100 on October 14. The first book of Pooh stories by the British writer A. A. Milne was published on that day in 1926, with drawings by the illustrator E. H. Shepard.
2The first part of the character's name came from a real animal. In August 1914, Harry Colebourn, a veterinarian in the Canadian army, bought a black bear for 20 dollars at a train station in White River, Ontario. He named her Winnipeg after his hometown and called her Winnie for short. Before his unit left for France during World War I, he left Winnie at the London Zoo, where she lived until 1934.
3Milne's son, Christopher Robin, met Winnie at the zoo, and the bear inspired his father to write about Winnie-the-Pooh. The boy's stuffed animals also shaped the stories, and the toys that inspired them are now on permanent display at the New York Public Library. In the early 1960s, Disney obtained the rights to Milne's work, and it has released many animated films and TV series about Pooh since then.
4Events for the anniversary are taking place in several countries. In August, the New York Public Library announced that it would give away 3,000 copies of the book, donated by the publisher Penguin Random House, at events in its branch libraries. Visitors can also post birthday cards to Pooh in special mailboxes. In Britain, Anglesey Abbey, a National Trust site near Cambridge, is running a Pooh story trail from October 3 to January 3, along with an exhibition of original books and Shepard's artwork.
5Japan has joined in as well. An exhibition marking the anniversary opened at the Matsuya Ginza department store in Tokyo in March and later traveled to other cities, including Osaka. On October 14, Disney's official accounts in Japan posted birthday video messages for Pooh from famous fans.

文法ポイント:関係副詞 where(, where ~ で場所を説明する)
本文の he left Winnie at the London Zoo, where she lived until 1934 は「ロンドン動物園にあずけ、ウィニーはそこで1934年まで暮らした」。
