A 14-Year-Old Song Rides an Indonesian Boat Race to the Top

1High school students in Japan have named a 14-year-old song as the biggest viral moment of the first half of 2026. The song is Yoru no Odoriko, which the rock band Sakanaction released in 2012. In an online survey by Wakamono Research, a company that studies young people, students wrote down whatever had gone viral for them. The song came first with 6.1 percent of the 377 answers.

2The comeback began with short videos that set the song to footage of Pacu Jalur, a traditional boat race in Indonesia. Oricon, a Japanese music chart company, reported that the videos were first posted in South Korea. They then spread to Japan through TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Ichiro Yamaguchi, the band's singer, joined the trend by performing the dance himself.

3Pacu Jalur takes place every August on the Kuantan River in Riau Province, on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The race is held around Indonesia's Independence Day, August 17. Its history goes back to the 17th century, when local people used long wooden boats called jalur to carry goods and people along the river. Today, each boat carries dozens of rowers, and young dancers at the front encourage them.

4The dancers had already become famous online in 2025, when clips of them spread around the world under the name aura farming. Well-known athletes copied the moves. Local officials expected as many as 100,000 extra spectators at the 2025 race because of the attention, the Jakarta Post reported. In 2026, videos pairing the same kind of footage with Yoru no Odoriko became a trend of their own.

5TikTok said related videos on its platform passed 1.1 billion views by May 2026. Fourteen years after its release, the song also reached the top of streaming charts in Japan. On June 30, it won the Impact Song award at TikTok's trend awards for the first half of 2026.
