Ten Minutes of Moderate Running Lifted Mood and Mental Control

1Running at a moderate pace for just 10 minutes improved mood and performance on a test of mental control, researchers at the University of Tsukuba have found. The team, led by Professor Hideaki Soya, published the study in the journal Scientific Reports in November 2021.

2Twenty-six healthy young adults in their early 20s took part, 18 men and eight women. Each person ran on a treadmill for 10 minutes at 50 percent of their peak oxygen uptake, a level defined as moderate. On another day, each person rested for 10 minutes, and the order of the two sessions was random.

3Before and after each session, participants took a Stroop test, in which some color names appear in other colors, such as RED in green. People answer more slowly when the word and the ink color do not match. This delay is a common measure of executive function, the brain's ability to control attention and actions. After running, the delay shrank more than after resting, and participants reported feeling more awake and in a more pleasant mood.

4The team measured brain blood flow with near-infrared light. During the test, activity rose on both sides of the prefrontal cortex, the front part of the brain involved in mood and executive function. Earlier studies, most of which used cycling, had found activity mainly on the left side.

5The study was small and looked only at a single run by young adults, not teenagers. The second test was given about 15 minutes after the run. It did not measure how long the effects lasted. The researchers said their data could not show whether the better mood led to the better test results.

6In a 2018 study, Tsukuba researchers and scientists at the University of California, Irvine tested even lighter exercise. Thirty-six healthy young adults did 10 minutes of very light exercise, a level UC Irvine compared to yoga or tai chi. Soon after, they were better at telling similar memories apart than after resting.

文法ポイント:前置詞 + 関係代名詞(in which / most of which)

本文の a Stroop test, in which some color names appear in other colors は「ストループテスト、つまりその中で一部の色の名前が別の色で出てくるテスト」。Earlier studies, most of which used cycling most of which は「そのうちのほとんど」。
