Learning by Teaching Works Best From Memory, Study Suggests

1Students who explained a lesson from memory learned it better than students who taught from a script, researchers at the National University of Singapore have found. Aloysius Koh and two colleagues published the study in the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology in April 2018.

2Earlier research had shown that teaching others can improve the teacher's own learning, but the reason was not clear. In a 2014 study led by researchers at Washington University in St. Louis, students who expected to teach a passage recalled more of it than those who expected a test. Their recall was also better organized. None of them actually taught.

3In the Singapore study, 124 students with no background in the topic read a text about sound waves and the Doppler effect for 10 minutes. All of them were told to prepare to teach. Each student then spent five minutes on one of four tasks. One group gave a lesson to a video camera without notes, while another read a prepared teaching script aloud. A third group wrote down everything they could recall, and a fourth solved multiplication problems.

4On a test one week later, the group that taught from memory scored higher than the script group and the multiplication group. The group that only wrote down what they remembered did about as well as the teaching group. The authors concluded that the benefit of teaching may come from retrieval practice, the effort of pulling information out of memory.

5The students taught to a camera, not to real learners, so there were no questions or discussion. In a 2022 review, Keiichi Kobayashi of Shizuoka University said the idea could not yet be fully tested. He noted that some later studies found explaining worked better than recall alone, while others found no clear difference.

6The Singapore team suggested that people should learn material well enough to present it without notes.

Earlier research had shown that teaching others can improve the teacher's own learning
