Shipped or Sold? The Numbers Behind a YouTuber's Tea

1A barley tea created by Japanese YouTuber HIKAKIN sold more than 16 million bottles between its April launch and July, his company said. The drink, called ONICHA, went on sale on April 21 at 7-Eleven stores across Japan in 600-milliliter bottles priced at 138 yen before tax. In June, the marketing company AMF ranked the barley tea fourth among products in its list of trends among teenage girls. The list was based partly on a survey of 1,000 junior and senior high school girls across Japan.

2On April 25, HIKAKIN said on his YouTube channel that more than seven million bottles had been shipped. He had prepared that amount to last about two months. Many stores soon ran out.

3The seven million figure drew questions online. A bottle that has been shipped has not necessarily been sold. Shipments count the products sent out to stores, while sales count the products that customers actually buy. Some people said the figure only showed how many bottles had been delivered to stores.

4BEE, the company HIKAKIN set up to develop his products, later gave a different kind of number. It said the 16 million figure counted bottles that shoppers had bought in stores. The company stressed that this was a count of actual sales, not shipments. In September, the total was reported to have passed 20 million bottles. One marketing news site reported that some social media users had questioned the 20 million figure.

5On October 3, a corn tea that uses only corn grown in Hokkaido went on sale at 7-Eleven stores as a new version of ONICHA. According to the news site KAI-YOU, HIKAKIN said on X that the corn tea had passed 1.3 million bottles within two days. Like the seven million figure, that number came from HIKAKIN himself.

HIKAKIN said ... that more than seven million bottles had been shipped.
