Shipped or Sold? Reading the Numbers

1Japanese YouTuber HIKAKIN's barley tea sold more than 16 million bottles by July, his company said. The tea, called ONICHA, went on sale at 7-Eleven stores across Japan in April. A 600 ml bottle costs 138 yen before tax.

2Four days after it went on sale, HIKAKIN said more than seven million bottles were shipped. Soon, many stores ran out of the tea. But shipped and sold do not mean the same thing.

3Shipped bottles are sent to stores. Sold bottles are bought by shoppers. Some people online pointed out this difference. Later, his company, BEE, said the 16 million number showed real sales, not shipments.

4In June, the tea came fourth in a ranking of trends among teenage girls. On October 3, a new corn tea from HIKAKIN went on sale at 7-Eleven. It is made from corn grown in Hokkaido. HIKAKIN later said on X that it passed 1.3 million bottles in two days.

Sold bottles are bought by shoppers.
