Romantic Love Tied to the Brain's Reward-Seeking System

1Researchers in Australia have linked romantic love to a brain system that drives people to seek rewards. The study was published in the journal Behavioral Sciences in November 2023. It was led by Adam Bode of the Australian National University. The team said it was the first study to look at this system and romantic love together.

2The system is called the behavioral activation system, or BAS. It is linked to dopamine, a brain chemical involved in reward and motivation. The BAS becomes active when people expect something good, and it pushes them toward their goals. The researchers rewrote 11 BAS survey questions to be about a partner. One question asks whether people feel energized when their partner says they love them.

3The survey included 1,556 English-speaking young adults aged 18 to 25 who said they were in love with a partner. They came from more than 30 countries. The team then focused on 812 of them who had been in love for less than two years and reported intense feelings. In this group, people whose BAS reacted more strongly to their partner tended to report more intense love. The BAS questions explained almost 9 percent of the differences in love intensity, after factors such as commitment were taken into account.

4Co-author Phillip Kavanagh of the University of Canberra said the findings show that romantic love is linked to changes in behavior as well as emotion. Because the study was based on a survey, it shows a link, not a cause. The authors said the results still need to be tested with a different group of people.

5Earlier brain scans point in a similar direction. In a 2005 study, 17 people who were intensely in love looked at photos of their partner inside an MRI scanner. Dopamine-rich reward areas, including the ventral tegmental area, became more active. In the Australian survey, participants said they spent about half of their waking hours, on average, thinking about the person they loved.

本文の people whose BAS reacted more strongly to their partner は「恋人に対して BAS がより強く反応する人たち」。whose は his / her / their の代わりになる。
