Growth Mindset Lesson Helped Lower Achievers, With Limits
1A short online lesson teaching that intellectual abilities can be developed raised the grades of lower-achieving U.S. high school students, a national experiment found. The results were published in the journal Nature in August 2019. The study was led by David Yeager of the University of Texas at Austin, with researchers from Stanford University and other institutions.
2The National Study of Learning Mindsets included about 12,500 ninth graders at 65 public high schools, chosen to represent the country. Students were randomly assigned to one of two programs. The growth mindset group completed two online sessions of about 25 minutes each during school hours. They learned that the brain is like a muscle that grows stronger through hard learning, and then explained the idea to future ninth graders who might be struggling. The other group had sessions on brain functions that did not address beliefs about intelligence.
3Lower-achieving students, defined as those with grades at or below their school's median, earned 0.10 more grade points in core classes on a scale of 0 to 4. The share of these students with a D or F average fell by more than five percentage points. Higher-achieving students saw no gain in grades. However, the rate of students taking advanced math, Algebra II or higher, in 10th grade rose from 33 percent to 36 percent.
4The effect on grades depended on the school. It was larger in schools where peers tended to choose challenging math problems, and smaller in schools with higher overall achievement. The program takes less than an hour and is free for schools in the United States and Canada.
5Two meta-analyses published in Psychological Science in 2018, before the Nature study, found weak effects overall. One of them combined results from mindset programs involving more than 57,000 students. It found some support for the idea that students from low-income families or those at risk of failing might benefit.

文法ポイント:関係副詞 where(場所を説明する)
