Can Your Brain Grow?

1A short online lesson about the brain helped some students get better grades, a study found. The lesson taught students that their abilities can grow. This idea is called a growth mindset.

2More than 12,000 ninth graders at 65 public high schools in the United States took part. Students were put into two groups by chance.

3One group learned that the brain is like a muscle. It grows stronger when you learn hard things. The other group had a lesson about what the brain does. The first group did two online lessons of about 25 minutes each.

4Students who had lower grades before the study got slightly better grades at the end of the year. The change was about 0.1 points on a scale of 0 to 4. Students with high grades did not get better grades.

5In 2018, other researchers looked at many studies of mindset lessons. They found that the effects were weak overall. But students who were having trouble at school might be helped more.

Students were put into two groups by chance. This idea is called a growth mindset.(この考え方は成長マインドセットと呼ばれる)も受け身。
