Dubai Chocolate Mochi Topped Teen Lists, but the Boom Is Cooling

1Dubai chocolate mochi, a rice cake filled with pistachio cream chocolate and crunchy pastry, was one of the biggest food trends among Japanese teenage girls in the first half of this year. Newer surveys, however, show that the boom is cooling down.

2The company Mynavi surveyed 610 girls aged 13 to 19 from April 16 to 30 and released the results on June 10. In the goods category, 40.5 percent chose the dessert, second only to sticker albums at 44.9 percent. Respondents said it drew attention after a member of a Korean pop group described it as delicious.

3Mynavi described the sweet as a chewy mochi wrapper around thin, crunchy kadayif and smooth pistachio cream chocolate. Kadayif is a shredded pastry that looks like fine noodles. The company said the contrast between the textures is what makes the dessert fun to eat.

4The dessert grew out of Dubai chocolate, a bar filled with pistachio cream and kadayif that was first sold by a dessert shop in Dubai. In South Korea, a similar dessert called dujjonku, short for Dubai chewy cookie, became popular from around September 2025. It uses a chewy chocolate marshmallow in place of the chocolate shell. The Korea Times reported in January that its future was uncertain. The paper also noted that tanghulu, candied fruit on a stick, became a craze in 2023 but was fading by May 2024.

5In Japan, the survey group Shibuya Trend Research asked 200 high school students in June which foods were trending. Dubai chocolate mochi came third with 11.8 percent. In the group's September survey, its share fell to 3.2 percent, while malatang and Korean-style frozen yogurt took the top two spots.

本文の a rice cake filled with pistachio cream chocolate and crunchy pastry は「ピスタチオクリームのチョコとザクザクした生地が入った(詰められた)おもち」という意味。
