1Cookie makeup, a look built on soft browns and beiges with a matte finish, has become one of the year's top beauty trends among Japanese teenage girls. Makeup guides compare its warm look to freshly baked cookies.

2The Tokyo marketing firm AMF released its buzzword awards for junior high and high school girls on June 29. The results were based on a nationwide survey of 1,000 girls and choices made by a team of student members. Cookie makeup placed fifth in the goods category, the only makeup trend in its top five. A soft squishy toy and a Dubai chocolate mochi sweet took the top two spots.

3AMF described the style as warm and soft, with the gloss toned down. It said the main appeal is a natural but done-up face. The firm added that the look is easy to copy with low-priced cosmetics.

4The trend has also spread through magazines and social media. In July, the teen fashion magazine nicola ran a guide on its website, advising readers to keep to one tone of beige and brown and to hold back on shine and glitter. The same month, a Japanese idol singer posted her own version on social media and said it was a change from her usual pink makeup.

5Many versions of the look include small freckles drawn across the cheeks and nose. In September, a Japanese business news site reported on a makeup artist's video that used liquid eyeliner to add the dots.

本文の a look built on soft browns and beiges は「やわらかいブラウンとベージュをもとに作られたメイク」、small freckles drawn across the cheeks and nose は「ほおと鼻にかけて描かれた小さなそばかす」。
