Shanghai-Born Butter Mochi Climbs Japan's Teen Food List
1Butter mochi, a baked rice cake dessert that started in Shanghai, has moved up to third place in a ranking of foods trending among Japanese high school students this autumn. The sweet is known for its crispy outside and soft, chewy inside.
2Shibuya Trend Research surveyed 200 students aged 15 to 18 online from September 15 to 21. Butter mochi was named by 3.7 percent, tied with a seasonal autumn burger and up from 2.4 percent and sixth place in June. The group said the dessert is often seen on TikTok and that some students bake it at home using recipes they find on social media.
3The dough is made from glutinous rice flour and tapioca flour, mixed with butter and milk, and then baked. In Japan, the convenience store chain Lawson began selling its own version in July in all areas except Okinawa. It looks like a canele, a small French cake.
4Before reaching Japan, the dessert became a hit in South Korea early this year. In March, the Korea JoongAng Daily reported that one cafe in Seoul had sold up to 200 pieces a day at its peak, but that demand had since fallen by half. Two university professors told the paper that desserts are cheap and easy to try, so trends spread fast but do not last long. One of them added that social media can make some desserts seem more popular than they really are.
5In Japan, chewy food has strong support among teenagers. In an October 2025 survey of 267 girls aged 15 to 19, the company Mynavi found that 47.6 percent chose mochi-mochi, meaning chewy, as a texture that makes food look tasty. It was the top answer, ahead of crunchy at 27.3 percent and fluffy at 27.0 percent.

本文の reported that one cafe ... had sold up to 200 pieces a day ... but that demand had since fallen by half は「(3月の時点で)それまでに1日200個売れたことがあり、その後、注文は半分に減っていた」という意味。
