Skipping Breakfast Tied to Lower Grades, but Cause Unclear
1High school students with good grades are less likely to skip breakfast, a report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found. The report, published in October 2024, used a 2023 national survey of students in grades 9 to 12.
2Of the 20,103 students in the survey, 17.9 percent said they had not eaten breakfast on any of the previous seven days. Students who earned mostly A's and B's were about 35 percent less likely to skip breakfast every day than those with mostly C's, D's or F's. Daily skipping was more common among students who reported lasting feelings of sadness or hopelessness.
3Data from Japan point in the same direction. Japan's 2024 national achievement test was taken by sixth graders and third-year junior high school students. Those who ate breakfast every day scored about 15 points higher in each subject than those who never ate it. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries reported the gap in June 2025.
4A study in Spain looked at what teenagers eat. The study of 653 students aged 12 to 16 in the Barcelona area appeared in the journal BMC Medicine in January 2026. Teens who ate more ultra-processed food, such as sugary drinks, pastries and processed meat, did worse on a test of recognizing emotions. They also reported more behavior problems. A Mediterranean diet, with plenty of fruit, vegetables, beans and olive oil, was linked to fewer behavior problems. But it was not linked to any results six months later.
5None of these studies prove that eating a certain food makes students smarter. They show links, not cause and effect. The CDC authors said their survey could not show which came first. The Spanish researchers noted that mood might also affect what teenagers choose to eat.
6The CDC report suggested that schools make breakfast easier to get, for example by serving it in classrooms. The Spanish researchers suggested replacing processed school snacks with nuts and fresh fruit.

本文の those who ate breakfast every day は「朝ごはんを毎日食べた人たち」、those who never ate it は「まったく食べなかった人たち」。
