Chatbot Answers Hurt Exam Scores, but Hints Did Not

1High school students who practiced math with a ChatGPT-style chatbot later scored lower on an exam than students who had no AI help, a study has found. A second chatbot, designed to give hints instead of answers, largely avoided that problem.

2The research team included Hamsa Bastani and Alp Sungu of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. The team worked with nearly 1,000 high school math students in Turkey. The students were split into three groups. One group used GPT Base, which worked much like the standard version of ChatGPT. Another used GPT Tutor, which followed instructions written with teachers' help and guided students with hints rather than handing over answers. The third group studied only with textbooks and class notes.

3During practice sessions, students using GPT Base did 48 percent better than the group without AI. Those using GPT Tutor did 127 percent better. Then the researchers gave everyone an exam with no AI allowed. This time, the GPT Base group scored 17 percent lower than the textbook group. The GPT Tutor group scored about the same as the textbook group.

4The researchers said students in the GPT Base group had used the AI as a crutch during practice, and they did worse once it was gone. The team also reported that students who used AI were too optimistic about how much they had learned. The researchers said students and teachers need training in how to use AI well.

5The paper was published in the journal PNAS in June 2025. On October 13, Science News Explores, a science news site for students, featured the study in an article on whether AI weakens people's skills. Trent Cash, a researcher at the University of Waterloo in Canada, said fears that AI is making people less intelligent are probably overblown.

A second chatbot, designed to give hints instead of answers, ...
