Can AI Help You Learn Math?

1Using an AI chatbot for math practice can hurt learning, a study found. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania in the United States led the study. They worked with nearly 1,000 high school students in Turkey.

2One group practiced math with a chatbot like ChatGPT. It could simply give them the answers. During practice, they scored 48 percent higher than students without AI. But on a later test without AI, they scored 17 percent lower than those students.

3Another group used a special AI tutor. It gave hints, not answers. Teachers helped to design it. During practice, these students scored 127 percent higher than students without AI. On the test, they did about as well as students with no AI.

4The researchers said the first group relied on the AI too much. The study came out in the journal PNAS in June 2025. Science News Explores, a science news site for students, wrote about it on October 13.

文法ポイント:比較級 + than(~より…)

本文の they scored 17 percent lower than those students は「その生徒たちより17%低い点を取った」という意味。
