Fitness Gap Widens Between Sports Club Members and Others

1People in Japan who belong to sports clubs scored higher on fitness tests than those who do not, and the gap has widened among teenagers, a government survey has found. The Japan Sports Agency released its fiscal 2025 survey of physical fitness on October 11, a day before the national Sports Day holiday.

2The survey, conducted every year since 1964, covered 60,213 people aged 6 to 79. Participants took tests suited to their age, such as grip strength, sit-ups, and a shuttle run. The results were turned into total fitness scores. This year, the agency also analyzed 25 years of data to see how club membership relates to fitness.

3In every age group and for both sexes, club members had higher total scores than non-members. The difference has grown over the long term among 12- and 15-year-olds, which correspond to the first years of junior high and high school. Among 15-year-olds, members of school or community sports clubs scored 9.1 points higher than those who were not. The gap was much smaller among people in their late 60s.

4Club membership is high at age 12 but falls sharply by 19, and the decline is especially steep among women. The survey also found that the fitness of women in their 40s has dropped markedly.

5Busy working parents often have little time to exercise, the agency said. In response, the agency plans to support companies that encourage employees to exercise at work. It also wants to open school gyms and other local sports facilities to more residents.
