Larger Perovskite Solar Module Hits Record Efficiency
1Engineers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia have set a world efficiency record for a large perovskite solar module, the university said on October 7. Working with the energy company UtmoLight, the team reached a certified, stable efficiency of 23.5 percent. That beat the previous record by 0.6 percentage points.
2The record was set on a 30-by-30-centimeter module, with an active area of 676 square centimeters. Most laboratory perovskite cells measure only about one square centimeter. The record module is more than 600 times larger than such a cell.
3Perovskite is a next-generation solar material that converts sunlight to electricity efficiently and may be cheap to manufacture. It is often paired with silicon in so-called tandem cells, where each material captures a different part of the sunlight. Such cells could raise the output of a panel without making it larger.
4For the record, the team removed a layer of nickel oxide that is common in perovskite cells. That layer can react with perovskite and make the cells less stable. Durability remains the biggest weakness, because moisture, heat and long exposure to sunlight can break the material down.
5The team plans to build a full-size module of about 2.8 square meters, the size of a standard commercial panel. It hopes the larger module will reach an efficiency of 18 to 19 percent. Researchers said more work is needed on reliability and long-term stability before perovskite panels can be used widely.

文法ポイント:関係副詞 where(場所・場面を説明する)
本文の tandem cells, where each material captures a different part of the sunlight は「タンデム型の電池(その中では、それぞれの材料が日光の別の部分をとらえる)」という意味。
