A Telescope Made of Ice and a Light Switch for Neurons Win Nobels
1Francis Halzen, a physics professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the award on October 6. A day earlier, the medicine prize went to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for their work on optogenetics, a way to control brain cells with light.
2Halzen proposed using the ice at the South Pole to detect neutrinos, nearly massless particles that rarely interact with other matter. Because they rarely hit anything, neutrinos can travel across the universe almost undisturbed and carry information about black holes and distant galaxies. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, whose design he oversaw, uses thousands of light sensors buried in a cubic kilometer of ice. In 2013, IceCube detected high-energy neutrinos from beyond the solar system for the first time. In 2023, it found the first evidence of such neutrinos coming from our own galaxy, the Milky Way.
3The medicine prize grew out of a simple question. In the early 1990s, Hegemann wanted to know how a single-celled green alga swims toward light. He and Nagel found channelrhodopsin, a channel in the cell that opens quickly when light hits it. In 2005, Deisseroth's lab added its gene to rat nerve cells, which could then be switched on with blue light.
4Optogenetics lets researchers turn chosen brain cells on or off within thousandths of a second. It has helped show how nerve cells shape memories, feelings and behavior. The method is also being studied as a possible treatment for disease.
5The chemistry prize, announced on October 7, went to Kenso Soai of Tokyo University of Science and Henri Kagan of France. Each prize is worth 12 million Swedish kronor, or about 1.2 million dollars.
