Nobel Prizes for Ice and Light
1The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics went to Francis Halzen of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He led the work on IceCube, a giant detector at the South Pole.
2IceCube catches tiny particles from space called neutrinos. Neutrinos almost never hit anything, so they are very hard to catch. IceCube uses a huge block of ice with thousands of light sensors. In 2013, it found neutrinos from outside our solar system for the first time.
3The medicine prize went to three scientists. Two of them studied how a tiny green alga swims toward light. They found a part of the alga that reacts to light.
4The third scientist put the gene for this part into brain cells of rats. Then he could turn the cells on with blue light. This method helps scientists learn how the brain works.
5The chemistry prize went to Kenso Soai of Japan and Henri Kagan of France. Each prize is worth about 1.2 million dollars.

Neutrinos almost never hit anything, so they are very hard to catch.
