Tokyo Could Get Fully Driverless Taxis in 2027
1Three companies announced on September 15, 2026, that they plan to launch Japan's first fully driverless paid taxi service in Tokyo in 2027. The partners are Waymo, a self-driving car company in the United States, the Japanese taxi app operator GO, and the Tokyo taxi company Nihon Kotsu. No exact start date has been set.
2Under the plan, Waymo will provide the driving technology and the systems that manage the cars. GO will connect the service to Japan's taxi industry and handle bookings, while Nihon Kotsu will run the fleet day to day. Riders will be able to book through either company's app. Waymo's co-chief executive said the service would carry the public without anyone in the driver's seat from the first day.
3Waymo began collecting data in Tokyo in 2025, using cars driven by Nihon Kotsu drivers. The tests have covered seven of the city's wards, including narrow streets and crowded roads. Tokyo is the company's first public-road operation outside the United States.
4The service will start with a small number of cars and later grow to about 100 vehicles. The companies said driverless taxis could help Japan deal with its shrinking population and a shortage of professional drivers. Fully driverless robotaxis already carry passengers in parts of the United States and China.
5The plan still depends on approval from national and local authorities. Japan's current rules require a human driver in most vehicles on public roads, so permits must come first. The companies also said the start depends on finishing safety checks of the technology.

No exact start date has been set.
