Taxis With No Drivers in Tokyo

1Three companies plan to start driverless taxis in Tokyo in 2027. They announced the plan on September 15, 2026. It would be the first service of its kind in Japan.

2The taxis will have no driver inside. A computer system will drive the car. People will book a ride with a smartphone app.

3An American company called Waymo makes the self-driving system. A Japanese taxi app company and a Tokyo taxi company are working with it.

4The cars have driven in Tokyo since 2025 with human drivers. They collected data on narrow streets and in heavy traffic. In Japan, cars drive on the left side of the road. In the United States, they drive on the right.

5The service will start with only a few cars. Later, the companies plan to use about 100 cars. First, the government must give its approval.

The taxis will have no driver inside. や A computer system will drive the car.
