Japan's Centenarians Top 100,000 as Society Ages

1More than 100,000 people in Japan are now aged 100 or older, the first time the figure has crossed that line, the health ministry said on September 15. As of September 1, there were 107,677 centenarians, up 7,914 from a year earlier.

2The figure has climbed for 56 consecutive years. When the government began counting in 1963, Japan had just 153 centenarians. The number passed 1,000 in 1981 and 10,000 in 1998.

3Women made up 87.6 percent of the total, at 94,298, compared with 13,379 men. The country's oldest woman is a 114-year-old resident of Kyoto. Its oldest man, aged 112, lives in Kumamoto Prefecture. People who reach 100 receive a congratulatory letter from the prime minister and a silver cup.

4The milestone highlights Japan's aging population. A separate government estimate found that 36.2 million people, or a record 29.6 percent of the population, were 65 or older as of September 15. That is the highest share among countries with at least 40 million people, ahead of Italy at 25.6 percent. At the same time, the total fertility rate fell to a record low of 1.14 in 2025. That is far below the rate of about 2.1 needed to keep a population stable.

5A national census taken in 2025 showed that the population is shrinking faster than before. Experts project that it could drop to 87 million by 2070. By then, nearly 40 percent of the population may be 65 or older.

本文の the rate of about 2.1 needed to keep a population stable は「人口を保つのに必要とされる約2.1という率」という意味。
