More Than 100,000 People in Japan Are 100 or Older
Japan now has more than 100,000 people aged 100 or older. The health ministry said on September 15 that the number reached 107,677. It is the first time the number has passed 100,000.
The number went up by 7,914 from last year. It has risen for 56 years in a row. When the count began in 1963, there were only 153 people aged 100 or older.
About 88 percent of them are women. The oldest woman in Japan is 114 years old and lives in Kyoto. The oldest man is 112 and lives in Kumamoto.
People who turn 100 get a letter from the prime minister and a silver cup. At the same time, very few babies are born in Japan. Experts think the population may fall to 87 million by 2070.
