Fake Virus Warnings Become Japan's Most Reported Online Trouble
1Fake virus warnings were the most common problem reported to a Japanese cybersecurity help desk between April and June 2026. The Information-technology Promotion Agency, or IPA, said in a report released on July 22 that it received 1,428 consultations about the scam. That was about 24 percent more than in the previous three months and made up 37.3 percent of all consultations.
2The help desk received 3,832 consultations in total during the period. Most of them came in by phone, with 2,912 calls. Other common problems included people losing control of their social media accounts and phishing messages that pretend to come from real organizations.
3The warnings are designed to make people anxious. The fake warnings pop up while people browse the web, sometimes with alarm sounds or a recorded voice. They claim the device is infected and urge the user to call a support number. According to Japan's National Police Agency, the scammers then sell paid support plans or push the victim to install remote-control software. Some victims have paid with gift cards or electronic money bought at convenience stores.
4The police advise people not to call the number or install anything the warning recommends. Closing the browser usually removes the warning, and restarting the device can help if it will not close. Anyone who has already paid should contact the payment company and report the case to the police. Keeping the device's software up to date also lowers the risk.
