Japan Breaks Its Tourism Record Again

1A record 42,683,600 foreign visitors came to Japan in 2025, the Japan National Tourism Organization said on January 21, 2026. It was the first time the annual total had passed 40 million.

2The figure was up 15.8 percent from 36,870,148 in 2024, which had been the previous record. That means about 5.8 million more people visited Japan than in the year before. It was also about 10 million higher than the 2019 total of roughly 31.9 million, the last full year before the pandemic.

3South Korea sent the most visitors, at 9.46 million, an increase of 7.3 percent. China followed with 9.1 million, and Taiwan came third with 6.76 million. China's total was up 30.3 percent, and Taiwan's was up 11.9 percent. Visitors from the United States rose 21.4 percent to 3.3 million. Arrivals from Europe, the United States, and Australia grew by 22 percent combined.

4Not every market moved in the same direction. Visits from China fell sharply in December, after relations between the Japanese and Chinese governments became tense. That month, about 330,000 people came from China, down 45.3 percent from a year earlier. Even so, China's total for the full year was still the second largest after South Korea.

5Spending by foreign travelers also reached a record of about 9.5 trillion yen, up from 8.1 trillion yen the year before. The government aims to attract 60 million visitors a year by 2030. It has also set a spending goal of 15 trillion yen for that year.

36,870,148 in 2024, which had been the previous record
