Programmable Robots Smaller Than a Grain of Salt
1Engineers at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan have built swimming robots that are smaller than a grain of salt. The robots can sense their surroundings and act on their own without any outside control. The universities announced the work on December 15, 2025, and the results appeared in the journals Science Robotics and PNAS.
2Each robot measures about 200 by 300 by 50 micrometers. That is so small that it is barely visible to the naked eye. The researchers said each robot costs about one cent to produce. The team called them the world's smallest fully programmable, autonomous robots.
3The robots are powered by light that falls on tiny solar panels. The panels produce only 75 nanowatts, more than 100,000 times less power than a smartwatch uses. Instead of legs or fins, each robot creates an electric field that moves charged particles in the water, and those particles drag the water along. Using this method, the robots can travel up to one body length per second, sometimes in groups.
4Each robot carries a processor, memory and sensors. The sensors can detect temperature changes as small as a third of a degree Celsius. To report what they measure, the robots perform a small dance of wiggles, which researchers record through a microscope and decode. The team compared this to the way honeybees communicate.
5The robots can keep swimming for months. The researchers said future versions could monitor the health of individual cells or help build tiny devices in factories. Next, they plan to add more sensors and make the robots move faster.

That is so small that it is barely visible to the naked eye.
