Tiny Robots That Swim by Themselves

1Scientists in the United States have built robots that are smaller than a grain of salt. Teams from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan announced the robots on December 15, 2025.

2Each robot is about 0.3 millimeters long. People can barely see one without a microscope. Each robot costs only about one cent to make.

3The robots get their power from light. They have tiny solar panels on their bodies. The robots swim in water, but they have no legs or arms. They use electricity to push the water around them.

4Each robot has a very small computer inside. With it, the robot can measure the temperature nearby. Then the robot moves in a little dance to share the result. The scientists watch the dance through a microscope.

5The robots can keep working for months. The team said the robots may be used to check single cells in the future.

They use electricity to push the water around them.
