Bennu Samples Hold All the Parts Needed to Build RNA

1Scientists have found two important sugars, ribose and glucose, in samples brought back from the asteroid Bennu. NASA announced the discovery on December 2, 2025, and the study was published in the journal Nature Geoscience. The research team was led by Yoshihiro Furukawa of Tohoku University in Japan.

2NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft collected the material from Bennu and delivered about 120 grams of rock and dust to Earth in 2023. Earlier studies of the same samples had already found nucleobases and phosphates, two other key ingredients of genetic molecules.

3Ribose is the sugar in RNA, a molecule that carries genetic information in living cells. With ribose added to the list, all of the basic parts needed to build RNA have now been found in Bennu samples. Ribose had been detected before in two meteorites. Glucose, which provides energy for most life on Earth, had never been found in a sample from space until now.

4The team did not find deoxyribose, the sugar in DNA. The researchers said this may mean that ribose was more common than deoxyribose in the early solar system. That would fit the RNA world hypothesis, the idea that early life relied on RNA before DNA appeared.

5The scientists stressed that the sugars are not signs of life. Instead, the sugars show that the building blocks of life were widespread in the early solar system. In separate studies, other teams found a gum-like material never seen before in space rocks. The samples also contained about six times more dust from ancient exploding stars than any other space material studied so far.

文法ポイント:付帯状況の with(with + 名詞 + 過去分詞)

With ribose added to the list
