Sweet Surprise from an Asteroid

1Scientists have found sugars in rock and dust from an asteroid called Bennu. NASA announced the news on December 2, 2025.

2A NASA spacecraft brought about 120 grams of Bennu to Earth in 2023. A team led by a scientist at Tohoku University in Japan studied the samples.

3The team found a sugar called ribose. Ribose is a part of RNA, a molecule that all living things use. The team also found glucose, a sugar that gives us energy. This was the first time glucose was found in a sample from space.

4The sugars are not living things. But they show that some building blocks of life were in space long ago. Scientists say these materials may have come to Earth on asteroids. Other teams also found a strange gum-like material in the Bennu samples.
