Japan's 2025 Buzzwords, Translated

音声・ゲームはこちらから

1A phrase from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi won Japan's annual buzzword award for 2025 on December 1. The winning entry was hataraite, hataraite, hataraite, hataraite, hataraite mairimasu, which can be translated as I will work, work, work, work and work. It was paired with josei shusho, meaning female prime minister. The award is run by the publisher Jiyu Kokuminsha together with T&D Insurance Group.

2Takaichi used the phrase in October, in a speech after she was elected the first female president of the Liberal Democratic Party. In the same speech, she said she would set aside the idea of work-life balance for herself. That remark drew criticism from people concerned about overwork. At the award ceremony, Takaichi said she had no intention of encouraging people to overwork.

3Several other top ten words are fun to translate. Ehho ehho imitates the huffing sound of hard effort, and it spread online with a photo of a baby barn owl running through grass. Kokokomai means old, old, old rice. When rice prices soared, the government released rice from its stockpiles. Each extra ko marks one more year in storage.

4Niki, or two seasons, reflects a feeling that spring and autumn are disappearing as Japanese summers grow hotter. Myaku-Myaku, the mascot of the Osaka-Kansai Expo, was seen as strange at first, but goods featuring the character later sold very well. Kokuho, a film about the world of kabuki, also made the list after becoming a huge box-office hit.

5The top ten and the grand prize were chosen from 30 nominees announced on November 5.

全文訳

112月1日、高市早苗首相の言葉が、2025年の新語・流行語大賞に選ばれました。大賞は「働いて働いて働いて働いて働いてまいります」で、英語では I will work, work, work, work and work.

「古古古米」は old, old, old rice という意味です。

本文の a baby barn owl running through grass(草むらを走るメンフクロウのひな)や goods featuring the character(そのキャラクターをあしらったグッズ)がその例。
