Antarctic Ozone Hole Ranks Fifth Smallest Since 1992
1The 2025 ozone hole over Antarctica was the fifth smallest since 1992, NASA and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said on November 24, 2025. The hole also began breaking up nearly three weeks earlier than the average over the past decade. Scientists said the result shows that a global agreement to phase out ozone-destroying chemicals is working.
2The ozone layer is a thin shield of gas high in the atmosphere that blocks much of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Without it, people would face higher risks of skin cancer and eye disease, and ecosystems could be damaged. Every year, chlorine from human-made chemicals destroys ozone over Antarctica and creates a seasonal hole.
3Those chemicals were once used in refrigerators, air conditioners and spray cans. Under the Montreal Protocol, adopted in 1987, countries agreed to phase them out. Levels of the chemicals over Antarctica peaked around 2000. Since then, they have fallen by about a third. NASA scientist Paul Newman said the 2025 hole would have been more than 2.5 million square kilometers larger if chlorine levels were still as high as 25 years ago.
4At its peak between September 7 and October 13, the hole averaged 18.71 million square kilometers. That is still about 50 times the size of Japan, but roughly 30 percent smaller than the record hole of 2006. NOAA said warmer-than-usual air over Antarctica in August likely helped limit ozone loss.
5The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said the hole closed on December 1, the earliest closure since 2019. If current policies stay in place, ozone levels over Antarctica are expected to return to 1980 values around 2066. The rest of the world should reach that point around 2040.

本文の the 2025 hole would have been ... larger if chlorine levels were still as high as 25 years ago がその例。
