The Ozone Hole Is Getting Smaller

1The ozone hole over Antarctica was smaller than usual in 2025, NASA and NOAA said. It was the fifth smallest since 1992. It also started to close nearly three weeks earlier than usual.

2The ozone layer is a thin layer of gas high in the sky. It protects us from strong UV rays from the sun. Too much UV can hurt our skin and eyes.

3In the past, people used certain chemicals in fridges and spray cans. These chemicals made a big hole in the ozone layer. In 1987, countries around the world agreed to stop using them.

4The hole is still very big. In 2025, it was about 50 times the size of Japan. Scientists said the ozone layer over Antarctica may recover around 2066.

It was the fifth smallest since 1992.
