Overseas Fans Push Anime Market to Record High

1The global market for Japanese anime reached a record 3.84 trillion yen, or about 25 billion dollars, in 2024. The Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) released the figure at TIFFCOM, a content trade fair in Tokyo, on October 30, 2025. The market grew 14.8 percent from the year before. Only 2019, when the market grew 15.3 percent, saw a bigger rise.

2The AJA counts more than ticket sales and TV fees. Its figure also covers merchandise, music, live events, streaming, home video and licensing deals abroad.

3Overseas sales drove most of the growth. They jumped 26 percent to about 2.17 trillion yen. Domestic sales grew 2.8 percent to about 1.67 trillion yen. It was the third year that overseas sales were larger than domestic sales, after 2020 and 2023. Masahiro Hasegawa, who edits the AJA's yearly industry report, said the gap between the two would keep widening.

4Studios that actually produce anime also earned more. Their revenue rose 9.1 percent to a record 466.2 billion yen. Hasegawa said studio income grew more slowly because some overseas money, such as income from streaming, takes a few years to reach the studios.

5Working conditions remain a concern. A United Nations report said many animators work long hours for low pay. The Japanese government aims to raise overseas entertainment sales to 20 trillion yen by 2033. In 2024, those sales were estimated at about 6 trillion yen, so the goal is more than three times that amount.
