Ghibli-Style AI Craze Raises Questions About Art and Copyright

1A wave of Studio Ghibli-style images spread across social media in late March 2025 after OpenAI added a new image generator to ChatGPT. Users turned family photos, pets and well-known internet memes into scenes that looked like stills from a Ghibli film.

2Studio Ghibli, which Hayao Miyazaki founded with partners, is known for hand-drawn films such as My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away. Even OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman changed his profile picture on X to a Ghibli-style portrait.

3Demand was so high that the company struggled to keep up. Altman joked that the company's graphics chips were melting. OpenAI added temporary limits, and free users were allowed only three images per day. Altman later said ChatGPT had gained one million new users in a single hour.

4The trend also restarted a debate about AI and creative work. Critics raised concerns that AI tools are trained on copyrighted works without the artists' permission. A U.S. copyright lawyer said a style is generally not protected by copyright. However, he said the key question is whether a company had permission to train its AI on the original works. OpenAI did not say whether it had a license to train on Ghibli's films.

5OpenAI said it refuses requests to copy the style of a living artist but allows the general look of a studio. In a 2016 documentary, Miyazaki reacted strongly against an AI animation demo and said he would never use such technology in his work. Studio Ghibli declined to comment on the trend.

文法ポイント:名詞節を作る whether(~かどうか)

本文の the key question is whether a company had permission ... OpenAI did not say whether it had a license
