Blue Ghost Lands Upright and Sees an Eclipse from the Moon
1Firefly Aerospace, a private company based in Texas, landed its Blue Ghost spacecraft on the Moon on March 2, 2025. The lander touched down in Mare Crisium, a large plain on the northeastern part of the Moon's near side. Blue Ghost became the first private spacecraft to land upright and complete its entire mission.
2Earlier landers built by private companies had either crashed or ended up on their sides. Blue Ghost launched on January 15. The trip to the Moon took about 45 days. It carried 10 NASA instruments as part of a program in which NASA pays companies to deliver science equipment to the Moon.
3One experiment drilled into the ground to measure heat coming from inside the Moon. The drill reached about one meter deep, short of the three meters that had been planned.
4On March 14, people in parts of the world watched a total lunar eclipse. From the Moon, the same event looked like a total solar eclipse, because Earth passed in front of the Sun. Blue Ghost photographed the Sun as it came out from behind Earth.
5On March 16, the lander captured what its operators called the first high-definition pictures of a sunset on the Moon. One image shows a glow along the horizon. A NASA official said scientists must study the image before deciding whether the glow comes from floating dust, an idea first suggested by Apollo 17 astronaut Gene Cernan more than 50 years ago. The lander worked for about five hours into the lunar night and sent 119 gigabytes of data to Earth before its solar power ran out.

Earlier landers ... had either crashed or ended up on their sides
