Cycling in Japan is easy, but parking is where visitors and new residents get caught. Around any busy station there are marked bicycle parking areas, usually paid, sometimes with automatic racks, and a zone where leaving a bicycle is prohibited.
If you leave one in that zone, a municipal crew will load it onto a truck, and you will find a notice on a pole telling you which storage yard it went to. Recovering it costs a removal fee, commonly a few thousand yen, and the yard may be far from the station and open only on certain days.
Two other rules matter. Every bicycle should carry a theft-prevention registration sticker linked to your name, and police sometimes stop cyclists to check it, so keep the paperwork if you buy a used bicycle. Riding rules have also tightened, including penalties for using a phone while riding.

自転車には自分の名前と結びついた防犯登録の標識を貼ることになっており、警察がそれを確かめるために止めることがあるので、中古で買ったなら書類を残しておいてください。走行の決まりも厳しくなっており、乗りながら携帯電話を使うことには罰則があります。
