The standard explanation
Bunkobon are pocket-sized paperback books. Most are about 10.5 by 15 centimeters, so they fit in a jacket pocket or a small bag. Many popular novels first come out as larger, more expensive books and are reissued as bunkobon a few years later at a lower price. You often see people reading them on trains.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
If you look around a Japanese train, you may see people reading small books with plain paper covers. Many of those are bunkobon, or pocket-sized paperbacks. Most bunkobon are about 10.5 by 15 centimeters, a little smaller than a typical American paperback, and they are light enough to hold in one hand.
One famous starting point is 1927, when the publisher Iwanami launched a series of inexpensive classics, modeled on a German paperback series. Today, most major publishers have their own bunko line, from classic literature to mystery novels and essays.
A common pattern is that a new novel comes out first as a larger, more expensive book, and then, a few years later, it is reissued as a bunkobon at a lower price. Many readers are happy to wait for that version. Because the size is almost the same across publishers, bunkobon also line up neatly on a shelf. Personally, I love that I can carry two or three of them in a small bag.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
Why do bookstores put paper covers on them?
Many bookstores offer a free paper cover when you buy a book. It protects the book in your bag, and it also means people on the train can't see what you're reading.
Are bunkobon only novels?
No. There are bunko editions of essays, history books, classic literature and even some manga. Bunko is a size and format, not a type of story.
