The standard explanation

Tategaki is the traditional way of writing Japanese. You read each line from top to bottom, and the lines go from right to left. Today Japanese is written both ways: newspapers, novels and Japanese-language textbooks are mostly vertical, while websites, business documents and math textbooks are horizontal. Because the lines move to the left, vertical books open from what looks like the back to Western readers.

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Many visitors are surprised when they pick up a Japanese novel and find that it seems to open from the back. The reason is tategaki, or vertical writing. In tategaki, you read each line from top to bottom, and the next line starts to its left. So the book is bound on the right side and opens in the opposite direction from an English book.

Japanese can also be written horizontally, from left to right, just like English, and in daily life people use both. Newspapers, novels, manga and Japanese-language textbooks are usually vertical, while emails, websites and science textbooks are horizontal.

In a government survey published in 2026, about two-thirds of people aged 16 and over said they read or write vertically at least sometimes, most often in paper books and dictionaries. Vertical writing also has its own small rules. For example, numbers are often written in kanji, and the long-vowel mark turns into a vertical line. Personally, I find long novels easier to read vertically.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Do Japanese people read manga from right to left too?

Yes. Japanese manga open from the right, and you read the panels from the top right to the bottom left. Many English editions used to be flipped like a mirror image, but today most keep the original Japanese direction.

Q

Which is more common now, vertical or horizontal?

It depends on what you are reading. Almost everything on a screen and most work documents are horizontal. Paper books and newspapers are still mostly vertical, so most people read both every day without thinking about it.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHJapanese is always written vertically.

FACTBoth directions are normal. Most writing on screens and at work is horizontal, while books and newspapers are often vertical.
