Can a cut heal well in space? Scientists are not sure yet. On Earth, they used machines that turn cells around and around. This makes the cells feel almost no gravity.
In these tests, the cells that close a wound often moved more slowly. Wounds in some animals also healed more slowly. But scientists have very little data from real astronauts. So the answer is still "maybe."

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Can a cut heal well in space?
Q2. What did the machines do to the cells?
machines that turn cells around and around とあるので D。
Q3. In this passage, "heal" means ...
Can a cut heal well?
Some websites claim that wounds do not heal in space, but the science is less certain. Healing depends on teamwork between many types of cells. One important type, called fibroblasts, moves into a wound and produces material to fill the gap. Because experiments in space are difficult, most studies are done on Earth with devices that keep rotating cells so they cannot sense the direction of gravity. In many of these studies, fibroblasts moved more slowly. Animal experiments also showed delayed healing.
However, skin surface cells sometimes grew and moved even faster in the same conditions. Most importantly, there is still very little data on real human wounds in space, so scientists can only say that healing is probably slower.

Q1. What is the main point of the passage?
第1文で the science is less certain と述べ、最終文で probably slower とまとめているので C。
Q2. What do fibroblasts do, according to the passage?
fibroblasts, moves into a wound and produces material to fill the gap とあるので B。
Q3. Why can scientists only say that healing is "probably" slower?
最終文で there is still very little data on real human wounds in space, so ...
Injuries are often said not to heal in space, but that claim oversimplifies a field where the evidence is still patchy. Wound repair is a coordinated sequence involving platelets, immune cells and fibroblasts, which migrate into a wound and lay down collagen. Spaceflight experiments are expensive, so researchers usually rely on ground-based devices that keep cell cultures rotating to simulate microgravity.
A 2022 review from the University of Florence found that, in many such studies, fibroblasts lost their normal shape and migrated less effectively. A 2023 study using a large European Space Agency centrifuge reported similar delays under altered gravity. Animals kept in an unloaded state also tend to heal more slowly. The results do not all point the same way, though.
Skin surface cells called keratinocytes sometimes multiply faster in simulated microgravity, even though healing in whole animals is delayed. That mismatch shows how risky it is to extrapolate from one cell type to a whole organism. Simulated microgravity is also not true weightlessness, and in-flight data from humans are scarce, with radiation and stress acting as confounding factors. On a mission to Mars, there will be no hospital.
