Many people listen to sad songs when they feel down. Why do we enjoy sad music? A research team in Japan asked people two questions: "What feeling does the song show?" and "How do you feel?" People said the song was sad.
But their own feelings were more romantic and pleasant. Sad music lets us feel sadness from a safe place, so it can feel good.

It seems strange that people enjoy sad music, since most of us try to avoid sadness in real life. In 2013, a Japanese research team asked people to listen to sad and happy pieces of music. They rated two things separately: the emotion the music expressed and the emotion they actually felt.
The sad music was recognized as sad, but listeners' own feelings were less sad and included more romantic and pleasant emotions. The researchers explained that sadness in music is "vicarious": we can taste the feeling without any real loss. A 2012 study also found that people with high empathy, especially those who easily connect with stories, tend to like sad music more.

Why do people voluntarily listen to music that makes them sad, when they generally avoid sadness in everyday life? A 2013 Japanese study offered a clue by separating two kinds of emotion. Participants, both with and without musical training, listened to pieces in minor and major keys and rated, using many emotion words, both the emotion the music conveyed and the emotion they themselves experienced.
Sad pieces were clearly perceived as sad, yet the felt emotions were less sad and contained more romantic and pleasant feelings. The authors suggested that musical sadness is vicarious: because it carries no real-life consequences, listeners can savor the emotion from a safe distance, much as a roller coaster lets us enjoy fear safely. Individual differences also matter.
A 2012 study found that people high in empathy, particularly those prone to absorbing themselves in fiction, were more likely to enjoy sad music and to be moved by it, and a 2015 review listed emotional regulation, comfort and aesthetic appreciation among its rewards. The hypothesis that a hormone called prolactin provides consolation, however, remains speculative. And for people who tend to ruminate, sad music can sometimes deepen a negative mood.
