Many cats love boxes. Why? One reason is that boxes are good places to hide. In a study in the Netherlands, new cats at an animal shelter were less stressed when they had a hiding box.
Another study tried something strange. Owners put four shapes on the floor that made people see a square, but there were no lines. Some cats sat inside this "square" too!

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. What happened to shelter cats that had a hiding box?
new cats ... were less stressed when they had a hiding box とあるので D。
Q3. In this passage, "hide" means to ...
Many cat owners have seen their pets ignore an expensive toy and climb into its box instead. Science suggests that boxes help cats feel safe. In a 2014 study in the Netherlands, 19 cats newly arrived at a shelter were divided into two groups, one with a hiding box and one without.
The cats with boxes showed lower stress after only three or four days. In a 2017 study in Canada, shelter cats spent more time in hiding places than with toys or high shelves. However, hiding cannot explain everything. In a 2021 study done at home, some cats sat inside an illusion of a square made by four shapes, as often as inside a real square.

Cats' fondness for boxes, summed up online as "If I fits, I sits," has attracted scientific attention. One explanation is safety. Cats are ambush hunters but also potential prey, so enclosed spaces may help them feel secure. In a 2014 study at a Dutch shelter, 19 newly arrived cats were randomly assigned to have a hiding box or not; those with boxes had significantly lower stress scores on days three and four, reaching around day three a level the others reached only on day 14.
A 2019 trial with 23 cats found a similar benefit, and a Canadian study showed shelter cats spent a median of 55 percent of their time in hiding places when given a choice. Safety may not be the whole story, though. In a 2021 citizen science study, owners placed a real square, an illusory Kanizsa square formed by four Pac-Man-like shapes, and a scrambled version on the floor.
The nine cats that sat in any shape chose the illusory square as often as the real one, suggesting they may perceive contours that are not there. However, only 30 of more than 500 registered cats completed the study, and stress was measured mainly through behavior.
