'Hanbon-eo': How Korean Is Slipping Into Young People's Japanese
1Korean words are spreading into the everyday Japanese of some young people, The New York Times reported recently. The newspaper called the trend Hanbon-eo, a blend of Korean and Japanese.
2A university student interviewed near the Korea Town in Tokyo's Shin-Okubo area said she uses jinjja and mianhae with her friends. The words mean really and sorry. She is not fluent in Korean, the report said. Another common word, kenchana, is the Japanese way of saying the Korean gwaenchana, or it's okay, and it has spread through social media.
3In a survey of high school students last year, kenchana tied for third place among popular slang words. Some expressions blend the two languages in a single phrase. Maji gomawo, for example, combines the Japanese maji, meaning really, with the Korean gomawo, meaning thanks. The report also mentioned hyung and onni, Korean terms for a close older friend. Japanese has no word that matches them exactly.
4The trend has reached advertising. In May, the drinks maker Suntory built an ad for a tea drink around the word kenchana. The word was spoken by Asa, one of the Japanese members of the K-pop group BABYMONSTER.
5Hiroko Sasa, a professor at Cyber Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, said the trend became noticeable around 2018, when BTS and BLACKPINK were especially active. Choi Eun-kyung, a professor of Korean at Kansai University, said using Korean words has become a way to show that you like K-pop or Korean culture. Still, the newspaper noted that Hanbon-eo has not spread across Japanese society as a whole. It is seen mainly among young people who already enjoy K-pop and Korean culture.

文法ポイント:関係副詞 when(~する〈時〉)
時を表す語のあとに〈when + 主語 + 動詞〉を続けて、「~した時」とくわしく説明する。本文の around 2018, when BTS and BLACKPINK were especially active は「BTSやBLACKPINKがとくに活躍していた2018年ごろ」。カンマのあとの when は「そしてその時」と補足する使い方。
