Young People in Japan Mix in Korean Words

音声・ゲームはこちらから

1Some young people in Japan are mixing Korean words into their Japanese. The New York Times wrote about this trend in a recent report. The report called it Hanbon-eo, a mix of Korean and Japanese.

2One popular word is kenchana. It comes from the Korean word gwaenchana, and it means it's okay. Last year, kenchana tied for third place in a survey of popular words among Japanese high school students.

3A university student in Tokyo told the newspaper she uses Korean words with her friends. For example, she says jinjja for really and mianhae for sorry. She is not good at speaking Korean, the report said.

4Some phrases mix the two languages. Maji gomawo means thanks a lot. Maji is Japanese, and gomawo is Korean.

5One expert said the trend became clear around 2018. BTS and BLACKPINK were especially active at that time. Still, the newspaper said the trend is seen mostly among young fans of K-pop and Korean culture.

It comes from the Korean word gwaenchana は「それは韓国語のクェンチャナから来ている」。主語が It なので comes と s がつく。
