Overseas Sales Push Anime Market Past 4 Trillion Yen

1Japan's anime industry market grew to a record 4.4491 trillion yen in 2025, according to preliminary figures. The Association of Japanese Animations, an industry group, released the numbers on October 30. It was the first time the market had passed 4 trillion yen.

2The figure is an estimate of how much users paid for anime and related products in Japan and abroad. The market grew 15.8 percent from the previous year. The group said both the size of the market and its growth rate were the highest on record. NHK reported that the market has hit a record high for five straight years.

3Overseas spending drove much of the growth. Sales outside Japan rose 17.2 percent to about 2.54 trillion yen, while those inside Japan rose 14.1 percent to about 1.91 trillion yen. The overseas total was about 636 billion yen larger than the domestic one. As a result, the overseas share of the market reached 57.1 percent, up from 56.5 percent in 2024.

4The group also measured a narrower market based on the sales of anime studios. That figure rose 8.4 percent to 505.5 billion yen, which was also a record. The share of studio sales that came from overseas grew to 27.9 percent.

5The full Anime Industry Report 2026 is scheduled to come out in early December. It will look at the anime business in 2025 in more detail. It will have about 120 pages and is expected to cost 22,000 yen.
