Remember, Remember: How a Failed Plot Gave Us the Word 'Guy'
1Across Britain, people will light bonfires and set off fireworks on the night of November 5, which falls on a Thursday this year. The event, known as Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night, marks the failure of a plot that happened 421 years ago.
2In 1605, a group of Catholics who felt that King James I treated them unfairly planned to blow up Parliament in London. The plot was organized by Robert Catesby. The plotters secretly brought 36 barrels of gunpowder to a cellar under the House of Lords. Early on November 5, Guy Fawkes, one of the plotters, was found in the cellar and arrested.
3Since then, the date has been marked with bonfires. People make a figure of Fawkes, often from old clothes stuffed with newspaper, and burn it on the fire. The figure is called a guy. In the past, children carried their guys through the streets and asked for money, saying "a penny for the guy."
4Word experts believe the English word guy comes from these figures. At first, guy was an insulting word for a person who looked strange or badly dressed. Over time, it came to mean simply a man.
5Fireworks in Britain normally cannot be set off between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., but the limit moves to midnight on Bonfire Night. On New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, it is 1 a.m. People under 18 cannot buy adult fireworks.

Since then, the date has been marked with bonfires.(それ以来、この日はたき火で記念されてきた)がその例。
