Bonfire Night and the Word Guy

1On November 5, people in Britain light bonfires and set off fireworks. The night is called Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night. This year, it falls on a Thursday.

2The tradition started with a plan in 1605. A group of men wanted to blow up Parliament in London. They hid 36 barrels of gunpowder under the building. But one of the men, Guy Fawkes, was caught there on November 5.

3Today, people make models of Guy Fawkes from old clothes and burn them on bonfires. Each model is called a guy. Word experts believe the English word guy comes from these models. Now it is used for any man.

4In Britain, fireworks usually cannot be set off between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. On Bonfire Night, people can use them until midnight.

The night is called Bonfire Night.(その夜はボンファイア・ナイトとよばれる)、Guy Fawkes was caught there(ガイ・フォークスはそこでつかまえられた)がその例。
