Putting Off Work Is a Big Problem for College Students

1U.S. college students named putting off work as the top problem for their studies. This habit is called procrastination.

2Itamar Shatz, a researcher at the University of Cambridge, studied the data. The survey asked 65,950 students at 97 colleges and universities about a list of 36 problems. It was done in the spring of 2025.

3In the past year, 72.3 percent of the students had trouble with procrastination. Stress was almost the same, at 73.8 percent. Also, 45.4 percent said procrastination hurt their schoolwork. No other problem hurt schoolwork for more students.

4The students decided for themselves whether a problem hurt their schoolwork. So the survey cannot show what causes what. The study says worry and poor sleep may also make procrastination worse. The survey was only about college students in the U.S.

5Shatz said colleges can help by splitting big assignments into smaller steps.

1アメリカの大学生が、勉強のいちばんの問題として「やることをあとまわしにすること」をあげました。このくせは、procrastination（先延ばし）とよばれます。

2ケンブリッジ大学の研究者、イタマール・シャッツさんがデータを調べました。この調査では、97の大学などの学生65,950人に、36の悩みのリストについてたずねました。調査は2025年の春に行われました。

3この1年で、学生の72.3％が先延ばしに困っていました。ストレスもほぼ同じで、73.8％でした。また、45.4％が「先延ばしで勉強に悪い影響が出た」と答えました。勉強に悪い影響が出たと答えた人の数で、これより多い悩みはありませんでした。

4悩みが勉強に悪い影響をあたえたかどうかは、学生が自分で判断して答えたものです。だから、この調査では、何が何の原因なのかはわかりません。研究では、心配ごとや睡眠不足が先延ばしをひどくしているかもしれない、とも書かれています。この調査は、アメリカの大学生だけを対象にしたものです。
