Procrastination Tops the List of Study Problems in a Large U.S. Survey
1Procrastination was the issue that U.S. college students most often said had hurt their studies, a new study has found. It was also nearly tied with stress as the most common problem.
2Itamar Shatz, a researcher at the University of Cambridge, analyzed survey answers from 65,950 students at 97 U.S. colleges and universities. The students took the survey in spring 2025. They were asked about a list of 36 issues they might have faced over the previous year. The list ranged from money problems to anxiety and ADHD. Shatz published his findings in the journal PLOS ONE on October 7.
3Overall, 72.3 percent of the students said procrastination had been a problem for them, compared with 73.8 percent for stress. When asked which issues had harmed their schoolwork, 45.4 percent chose procrastination. That was the highest share for any of the 36 issues. It was about 2.8 times the share for money problems and about 3.5 times the share for ADHD.
4ADHD came first, however, when the analysis looked only at students who had each issue. Of the students with ADHD, 64.1 percent said it hurt their studies, compared with 62.7 percent of those who had trouble with procrastination. Procrastination was also more common among undergraduates, at 74.8 percent, than among graduate students, at 66.2 percent.
5The survey has limits. Students judged for themselves whether an issue had hurt their work, so the results show links rather than proof of cause. The paper also says anxiety or poor sleep could lead to procrastination or make it worse. In addition, the students in the sample do not represent all U.S. college students.
6According to Times Higher Education, Shatz said poor time management is a symptom, not the cause, of procrastination. He suggested that universities help students divide large assignments into smaller steps. He also suggested more frequent deadlines for smaller pieces of work, since deadlines motivate procrastinators.

(When asked ~)
When asked which issues had harmed their schoolwork は When they were asked ~ の they were を省いた形で、「~とたずねられると」という意味。
