Hobi Aka: Why Young Fans Put Themselves in the Picture

1A social media term, hobi aka, has spread quickly among young people in Japan. The term is short for hobby account. It refers to an account, or a type of post, that shows someone enjoying hobbies such as oshi-katsu in a cute way. Oshi-katsu means supporting a favorite idol or anime character.

2Despite the name, the hobby is not the main subject. The star of each post is the person who runs the account. Fashion plays a large role, and fans often dress up before heading out for oshi-katsu.

3Mai Osada, who heads SHIBUYA109lab., wrote about the trend in a column for Senken Plus. She meets about 200 young people every month. In the lab's interviews, hobi aka is one of the words that young people have mentioned far more often over the past year or so. She wrote that the trend is said to have grown out of puku-puku kaiwai, a genre of short videos about a cute, high-quality daily life with a strong focus on beauty.

4Those videos required filming and editing skills, so only a limited number of people could take part. Hobi aka moved mainly to still photos, and Osada believes this lowered the barrier for many more young people. She also wrote that the main stage for hobi aka is X, even though Instagram had been the usual place for eye-catching photos. As one possible reason, she pointed out that X shows four photos at once without scrolling. She added that fans already use X every day to collect news about the people they support.

5Osada noted that generative AI now lets anyone create a similar look. For example, a photo taken at a ramen shop can become a hobi aka style picture after AI changes the background. She wrote that this shift is starting to affect how young people spend money, including on fashion.

1SNSの言葉「ホビ垢」が、日本の若い人たちのあいだで急に広がっています。この言葉は「ホビーアカウント」の略です。推し活などの趣味をかわいく楽しむ様子を見せるアカウント、またはそういう投稿のジャンルのことです。推し活とは、好きなアイドルやアニメのキャラクターを応援することです。

2名前とはちがって、主役は趣味そのものではありません。どの投稿でも、主役はそのアカウントを持っている本人です。ファッションが大きな役わりをもち、ファンはよくおしゃれをしてから推し活に出かけます。
