Chiikawa Movie Passes 2 Million Viewers in South Korea

1The first Chiikawa movie has drawn more than 2 million viewers in South Korea, less than four weeks after it opened there. The film reached a total of 2,112,687 viewers by October 24, a Japanese news site about Korea reported, citing data from the Korean Film Council. It opened in Korean theaters on September 30.

2The movie is still at the top of the Korean box office. On October 24, it was ranked first with 145,109 viewers. The film in second place drew 28,692 people that day, so Chiikawa attracted about five times as many. It had already passed 1 million viewers in its first 10 days in theaters, according to Inven Global. The site said that was two days faster than the Chainsaw Man movie Reze Arc in 2025.

3The movie is based on the manga by the artist Nagano. It was released in Japan on July 24. By October 6, more than 11 million people had seen it in Japan, Inven Global reported.

4In Korea, many of the fans are not children. According to The Korea Herald, nearly 70 percent of people who bought tickets through the CGV theater chain were in their 20s or 30s. The newspaper said young viewers feel close to the cute characters, who have to fight for low-paid jobs.

5Korean fans also use their own short name for the series. Like the Japanese name Chiikawa, it means something small and cute.
